HERBERT SAMUEL (BERT) THOMAS (1883 - 1966) - Feed the Guns with War Bonds and Help to End the War


  • Notes: Bert Thomas was the son of a sculptor in Wales and trained as a commercial metal engraver. In 1914 Thomas enlisted with the ''Artist''s Rifles'' alongside a number of other notable illustrators including Paul Nash. He drew a number of posters, including ''Feed the Guns with War Bonds''. His most famous was a cartoon of a British private lighting his pipe with the caption: "Arf a Mo''Kaiser". This poster alone raised GBP250,000 for the war effort.
