W. M. McCORMACK - Athenia 40.5 x 60 cm

  • Notes: At noon on September 3rd, 1939, Britain was at war. At 9pm on the same day T.S.S Athenia was bound from Liverpool to Montreal with 1103 passengers. Two hundred miles past the Hebrides she was torpedoed without warning by U 30, captained by Oberlentenant Lemp. 112 passengers died, 28 of them American. This was in total violation of international agreements, that unarmed passenger vessels were not to be attacked. Comparisons with the attack on the "Lusitania" during World War I were inevitable.
