Vintage African Namji tribal fertility doll (H30cm) with intricate glass beadwork and shells (H39cm) on stand. The Namji Doll (also known as the Dowayo Doll) originates from the Namji tribe in the north of Cameroon, West Africa. Traditionally carved from native rosewood, the dolls are often given to brides during wedding ceremonies to bring good luck with fertility and child birth. If a man presented a doll to a woman it would represent a marriage proposal. Namji dolls come in many sizes and shapes, and are sought after pieces of art.
