  • Provenance: Yannima Pikarli Tommy Watson, a senior Pitjantjatjara elder and Law Man of the Karimara skin group, was born around 1935 near Anumarrapirti, which is approximately 75 kilometres west of the small community of Irrunytju (also known as Wingellina) in Western Australia. The landscape of his homeland, near the tri-state border of Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, is visually beautiful but harsh, with chilling winter winds and extremely high summer temperatures.

Raised on the vast Pitjantjatjara lands, Watson lived a traditional nomadic life, hunting and gathering with his family. They travelled between Piltardi and other important rock holes, through the Petermann, Tomkinson, and Rawlinson Ranges, and through the Bloods and Walter James Ranges. During droughts, they would occasionally visit the Hermannsburg Mission and Areyonga for food rations. Watson was schooled in traditional culture, which became intrinsic to his soul, never forgetting the lessons of the elders.

Despite meeting Albert Namatjira and the early Papunya Tula artists, Watson only began painting in 2001. He became a founding member of the Irrunytiju Arts Centre at Wingellina, Western Australia, approximately 720 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs.

Watson's paintings have been exhibited worldwide and are featured in numerous significant public and private collections in Australia, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, and Art Gallery of Western Australia. Bond University on the Gold Coast also houses an extensive collection of his important works.
