  • Provenance: Timmy Payungka Tjapangati was a pioneering Pintupi artist born near Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) in Western Australia. He spent his early life living traditionally in the Gibson Desert until severe drought in the late 1950s forced his family to walk east to Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff), eventually leading them to the settlement at Papunya.

In 1971, while working on the Papunya community farm, he became one of the first Pintupi men to take up painting alongside the early Papunya Tula movement. His early works often featured figuration—animals, tracks, ceremonial forms—before evolving into more complex, abstract compositions rooted in ceremonial authority and Tingari narratives.

Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Tjapangati spent periods painting in Balgo and played a vital role in guiding the Pintupi people back to their homelands at Kiwirrkura. He was also a key custodian for Pintupi relatives who had remained isolated in the desert for decades.

His later works, marked by dense patterning and powerful geometric structures, reflect his deep cultural authority. Timmy Payungka Tjapangati remained an influential figure in Western Desert art until his passing in 2000.
