ROBERT HAWKER DOWLING (1827-1886) - Lieutenant Harington Astley Trevelyan - Survivor, the Charge of the Light Brigade 91 x 71 cm

    By descent in the family of the sitter

    Robert Dowling, born in England, emigrated to Tasmania at the age of seven. There he trained as a painter and advertised himself as a portrait painter. In 1857 he travelled to England painting portraits, genre and history scenes. He exhibited sixteen works at the Royal Academy between 1859 - 1880.

    Lieutenant Harington Astley Trevelyan was the son of Lieutenant Willoughby and born 1835. He was promoted to Lieutenant 15th February 1853 and embarked for the Crimea, May 1854. Trevelyan was wounded in the Charge of the Light Brigade 25th October 1854, shot in the calf of his left leg. He continued in the army becoming a Brevet-Colonel and retired on 7th July 1880. Trevelyan was presented with his Crimea Medal by Queen Victoria on Home Guards Parade, 18th May 1855.

    Following his retirment Trevelyan became manager at the Barton Estate Vineyard Company, Fresno California. The Barton Estate had a capacity of half a million gallons supplied by over 700 acres of grapes. He died on 29th September 1900, at the estate and was buried at Mountain View Cemetery. The funeral cortege for Trevelyan''s burial was three miles long.
