RICHARD CATON WOODVILLE (1857 - 1927) - The Last Shot at Colenso


  • Notes: Richard Caton Woodville was primarily a journalistic war artist in the late nineteenth century, renowned for his attention to detail. His paintings represent a pictorial history of the soldiers of Britain.

    With all their ammunition used, Lt Roberts K.R.R., Captain Schofield and Congreve drew upon the emergency rounds of Case (their last shot). They then stood to attention beside their gun, falling dead moments later having been pierced through by Boer Bullets. Lt Roberts earned the Victorian Cross along with Schofield and Congreve. A total of seven Victorian Crosses were awarded at Colenso, along with nineteen Distinguished Conduct Medals.
