Original Luna Park papier-mache Laughing Clown mask, made by Arthur 'Art' Barton, Luna Park artist in residence from 1935-1970 (70 x 55 x 50cm)

The mask was not only worn on the midway at Luna Park, but also appeared in the 1938 Sesquicentenary of Sydney celebrations (1938), the 1951 'Cavalcade of Jublilee' march (50 years of Federation) and numerous Waratah and Mardi Gras parades.
The only other known similar mask is in the North Sydney Heritage Centre collection (Stanton Library). Both were rescued by the Friends of Luna Park when they saved the park from demolition and redevelopment. Constructed pf papier-mache, wire and hessian, maintaining the original paint.
