Original Birth Certificate for Caroline Carleton Author of Song of Australia, author of Song of Australia Born 6 October 1811 to William and Mary Ann Baynes, this is the original Methodist Register Office document from London, signed by both parents. With her husband Charles Carleton, she arrived in Glenelg in 1839, taking a position of superintendant of West Terrace Cemetery in 1855. While at the Cemetery, Caroline wrote the poem Song of Australia, which won a prize at the Gawler Institute and was first performed there that year, with music by Carl Linger, one of the first patriotic songs used in colonial times. Carleton died in 1874.
