NICHOLAS CHEVALIER (1828 - 1902) - REVIEW AND ENCAMPMENT OF VICTORIAN VOLUNTEERS AT WERRIBEE 1 APRIL 1861
-
Notes: printed below: Respectfully dedicated to Col. Pitt, the Officers and volunteers of Victoria by their obedient servant John Lidgate Ross. Lithographed by R. Shepherd, Sgt EMDHR. Printed by John Mannin Ferguson, 1861. 23 regiments are listed below title with their officers named.
The Argus, Melbourne, 5 March 1861 stated - " The Easter of 1861 will of necessity be long remembered as the ''fasti'' of our great Colonial celebrations. It stands, or will stand, as an eminence in history."
Twenty thousand volunteers assembled on the plains of Werribee. This exercise was a result of the British government wanting to have a force powerful enough to protect Australian shores. The Werribee encampment, unprecedented in size, was the greatest event held in Victoria and the immense detail in Chevalier''s work celebrates the occasion.
A watercolour by Chevalier of the subject was gifted by Max Carter to the Art Gallery of South Australia in 2004.
