Lloyd Rees: Looking for Light, Holmes a Court Gallery, Perth, 21 June - 11 August 2002 (illus.). Concerned primarily with the golden thread which connects all humanity to the divine through nature, Lloyd Rees, whilst a confirmed agnostic, perceived the spiritual in the landscape and the light which floods it. His over-riding concern since the 1960's had been with the light, whether bouncing off the pale sandstone which surrounds Sydney Harbour or reflecting back off the still lake surface as we see here in Early Morning, Lake Illawarra. Simply and elegantly rendered in his preferred palette of titanium white, cerulean blue, yellow in all its manifestations, vermilion red, cadmium, with hints of deeper blue and flecks of light red, the landscape exalts in the transcendent beauty that Rees adored. Painted towards the end of his life, Early Morning, Lake Illawarra demonstrates his devotion to and preoccupation with the effects of light. Warm hues of the luminous sun rising over the distant Illawarra escarpment are caught and reflected by the lake below, transforming the body of water into a glittering white expanse. Rees had effectively 'broken through to a Turner-like simplicity, dissolving earthly forms into an ecstatic vision of spiritual possibilities of the Australian Landscape'.1. Exhibited in the 2002 survey exhibition Lloyd Rees: Looking for Light at the Holmes a Court Gallery, Perth, Early Morning, Lake Illawarra was exhibited alongside masterworks such as Australian Facade, c.1965 (Wesfarmers Collection, Perth) and September Sun, Sydney Cove, 1980 (Holmes a Court Collection, Perth). In his final interview with Janet Hawley, Rees reflected on the principle which had guided his practice, 'I felt if there was any sort of propaganda I could distribute, it was to paint beautiful pictures and send them out into the world to make people happy, because there is far too much unhappiness. that's my philosophy.'2. 1.
