  • Provenance: Lloyd Frederic Rees was a prominent Australian landscape painter renowned for his lyrical depictions of light and atmosphere. Born in Brisbane, Queensland, Rees studied at the Brisbane Technical College and later became a central figure in the Sydney art scene. His work, characterized by romanticism and a deep spiritual engagement with nature, often focused on the Australian countryside and urban architecture.

Rees was associated with the Northwood group and held a long teaching career at the University of Sydney, influencing generations of Australian artists. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, his style evolved from detailed representational works to more abstract, light-filled compositions, particularly in his later years when his eyesight was failing.

He received numerous accolades, including the Order of Australia and multiple Wynne Prizes. Lloyd Rees remains a celebrated figure in Australian art history, admired for his devotion to the transcendent qualities of landscape.
