JOHN WOLSELEY (1938 - )
Gosse Bluff: Contemplative thoughts and drawings after conversation about deep time with Janet in the outback wilderness, July 1990
pen and watercolour
32 x 27 cm (irregular) (frame: 53 x 48 x 3 cm)
signed lower right | Provenance: Gift from The Artist | "In 1990 I joined a painting trip with John Wolseley, driving through the desert from Uluru 212 km NE to camp in swags in the ancient crater, Gosse Bluff (thought to be the remnant of an impact crater). John is in his element in the outback, observing, thinking, listening to every sound. He loved the crickets. As the days and nights went by, he talked contemplatively about Deep Time. How we all pay too much attention to the surface of the earth. When I was back in Sydney writing my Good Weekend feature, John sent me this note and drawings. He shows the different layers that exist above and below the surface, especially the turrets of the desert mole crickets and a mole cricket." - Janet Hawley
