At the outbreak of WWII, McIndoe joined the New Zealand Expedionary Force and served in the Western Desert and Greece before being captured by the Germans in Crete in May 1941. He remained a P.O.W for four years. In 1945, an exhibition of his work at Simpons, Piccadilly, London was opened by Lady Freyberg, wife of Lt. General Freyberg D.S.O, V.C.
Lt. General Freyberg D.S.O, V.C:
Freyberg received his D.S.O at Gallipoli. A former New Zealand Swim Champion, Freyberg swam ashore at Bulain to plant diversionary flares during the initial landing. He was wounded at Helles but returned. In 1916, Freyberg transferred to the Western Front where for bravery late in the 1st Battle at the Somme, he was awarded a Victoria Cross. During his time on the Western Front, he received Two Bars to his D.S.O for outstanding bravery. In WWII Freyberg served as Commander of the 2nd N.Z.E.F in Greece, Crete, El Alamein, Western Front, North Africa and Italy. In 1946, he became the first person raised in New Zealand to be appointed Governor-General of New Zealand.
