  • Provenance: George Hairbrush Tjungurrayi (born c1943) is a leading figure of the Western Desert art movement and one of its original members. Raised traditionally in the Gibson Desert, he came out of the desert in the early 1960s and later joined the Papunya community, where the Aboriginal art movement began. Initially apprenticing under senior artists, George developed a distinctive minimalist style featuring rhythmic parallel lines inspired by ceremonial designs and the Tingari cycle, ancestral songlines central to Pintupi culture.

His works, while echoing Op-art aesthetics, remain deeply rooted in Country, depicting sacred sites around Kiwirrkura and Lake Mackay. George's first solo exhibition in 1997 was followed by critical acclaim and sell-out shows. Today, his paintings are exhibited internationally and held in major collections. A Wynne Prize finalist and highly commended in the Alice Prize, George was named among Australia's "50 Most Collectable Artists." His legacy continues through his son, artist Jake James Tjapaltjarri.
