    Mainwaring joined the 2nd Australian Imperial force in June 1941 and after five months was transferred to the Engineers as a Sargeant - Instructor, specialising in demolition. In 1942 he was sent to New Guinea as an Australian army artist on probabtion. He returned to Australia and then returned to New Guinea as an official war artist. He worked with the 6th Division fighting in Wewack. Mainwaring was discharged from the Australian Army in May 1947.
