  • Provenance: Garry Shead (born 1942 in Sydney) is one of Australia's most celebrated contemporary figurative painters, renowned for his lyrical and allegorical works that explore themes of love, literature, and national identity. His multifaceted career encompasses painting, printmaking, filmmaking, and cartooning.

Shead studied at the National Art School in Sydney from 1961 to 1962. During this time, he began creating experimental films and contributed cartoons to publications such as 'Oz', 'The Bulletin', and 'The Sydney Morning Herald'. He also worked as a scenic artist and film editor for ABC Television in the 1960s.

In 1966, Shead held his first solo exhibition at Watters Gallery in Sydney. The following year, he won the Young Contemporaries Prize, which facilitated travels to Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Europe. A pivotal moment occurred during a 1968 expedition to the Sepik Highlands in Papua New Guinea, where he discovered letters by D.H. Lawrence. This encounter profoundly influenced his later works, particularly the 'D.H. Lawrence' series inspired by Lawrence's novel 'Kangaroo'.

Shead's art is characterized by its narrative depth and symbolic richness. Notable series include the 'Royal Suite', reflecting on Australia's relationship with the monarchy, and the 'Bundeena' paintings, named after the coastal town where he settled in the late 1980s.

His contributions to Australian art have been recognized with several prestigious awards. He won the Archibald Prize in 1993 for his portrait of publisher Tom Thompson and the Dobell Prize for Drawing in 2004 for 'Colloquy with John Keats'.

Shead's works are held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. His enduring impact on Australian art is marked by his ability to intertwine personal narratives with broader cultural and historical themes.
