FREDERICK (FRED) WILLIAM LEIST (1878-1945 ) - Ypres 51 x 52 cm

    At the start of WWI, Leist worked for the War Office designing recruiting posters. In September 1917, he was appointed an official war artist with the Australian Imperial Force and attached to 5th Division HQ as an honourary Lieutenant. He was represented in the London exhibition of Australian war artists, Grafton Galleries, 1918.

    Leist''s work was included in an exhibition titled "Battle Lines - Canadian and Australian artists in the field, 1917-1919," held by the Australian War Memorial in conjunction with the Canadian War Museum. In the catalogue for the exhibition it is noted that "Fred Leist, the earliest Australian official war artist represented in this exhibition - heightens the gloomy nature of the subject matter."
