    Charles Bryant became an official war artist on 12 December 1917, based first at Messines, Belgium, and then the Western Front, France, early in 1918. In 1923, as a specialist marine artist, he was commissioned by the Australian Commonwealth Government to paint subjects relating to the 1914 occupation of German New Guinea by Australian troops.

    Charles Bryant''s work was included in an exhibition titled "Battle Lines: Canadian and Australian artists in the field 1917-1919", held by the Australian War Memorial in conjunction with the Canadian War Museum.
