  • Provenance: Billy Nolan Tjapangati was a highly regarded Pintupi artist whose life and work were deeply rooted in the Western Desert. Born near Nyinna Nyinna, south of present-day Kintore, he spent his early years living traditionally on Country before journeying east during one of the first Pintupi migrations.

After arriving at Haasts Bluff and later observing the Papunya painting movement at West Camp, he began painting in the mid-1970s. His practice focused on the Tingari Dreaming—ancestral narratives tied to the desert landscapes he traversed throughout his youth.

In the early 1980s, Tjapangati settled in Kintore with his second wife, fellow artist Kayi Kayi Nampitjinpa, and worked regularly with Papunya Tula Artists. His paintings are celebrated for their cultural authority and contribution to the development of contemporary Aboriginal art.

Tjapangati remained an influential figure within the Pintupi community until his passing in 2003, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inform and inspire desert art today.
