Ben Quilty is a renowned Australian contemporary artist and social commentator, born in Sydney in 1973. Recognised for his emotionally charged and expressive style, Quilty employs a distinctive technique of thick impasto and gestural brushwork to explore themes of contemporary Australian culture, masculinity, history, politics and social justice.

Quilty rose to prominence through a series of award-winning works, including the 2009 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the 2011 Archibald Prize for his portrait of Margaret Olley, and the 2014 Prudential Eye Award. In 2011, he served as an official war artist with the Australian Defence Force in Afghanistan, producing a significant body of work for the Australian War Memorial.

Cheat (2021) is part of The Beach series exhibited at Tolarno Galleries 2021. Created during the chaotic period surrounding the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election and the COVID-19 lockdowns, the series channels this period's collective social tension, aggression, and uncertainty.

"To make paintings of men punching the life out of each other feels like an apt response to being alive in 2021."

Inspired by American Realist George Bellows early C20th depictions of boxing matches, the subject of boxing is a metaphor for societal conflict and crowd mentality. The exhibition's title, The Beach, alludes to the 2005 Cronulla riots, and serves as a broader reflection on the enduring nature of human conflict—both historical and ongoing.
