Illustrated: Art & Australia p.609 Vol. 27 No. 4
Handwritten note extracted from the valuation by James Willis in the hand of JOF "the Baga inhabit an area of coastal Guinea consisting mainly of mangrove swamps. Known mostly for their huge nImba masks, the largest masked use in Africa (An example is in the Austrailan National Gallery in Canberra) They also produce some remarkable and sensitive sculpture. This extremely rare and superb piece depicts a mother with one child at each breast as a single carving. In many ways, including the overall treatment as well as handling of the detail work of the coiffures of the mother and children and in the ornamentation, this piece has close ties to the single kneeling female Baga figure in the Barbier Mueller Museum in Geneva and to the kneeling mother and child (with a drum on the mother''s head) in the British Museum Collection. A piece of great dignity and presence this piece takes 2nd place to neither of these great pieces.
