AUSTEN DEANS (NEW ZEALAND 1915 - ) - Self-Portrait in Western Desert 30.5 x 44 cm
-
Notes: Details below provided by Austen Deans:
"Actually painted near Maadi Camp, but we were living in tents which were sometimes shared with small sand-vipers, very deadly, but no-one was bitten; the snakes only showed up when a whirl-wind removed the tent and bedding at our officer, Lieutenant Teddy Dawson, and there were three of them. The 20th Battalion, with the 18th and 19th Battalions, were at Maadi for 18 months before meeting any action, except for a brief Italian campaign lasting less than a month, driving the Italians out at the Western Desert."
