Notes: This painting depicts HMAS Sydney on troop convoy duty just prior to her epic battle with the German raider, Emden.
On 1st November 1914, HMAS Sydney joined the escort of the first troop convoy from Australia to the Middle East which left Albany, Western Australia. On November 9th, she was ordered to investigate sightings of an unknown vessel of the Cocos Islands. The vessel was identified as the German cruiser SMS Emden.
The two ships engaged and the Sydney was hit by the guns of the Emden resulting in four dead and twelve wounded. However, HMAS Sydney''s superior firepower took its toll and the Emden was left beached on North Keeling Island.
