Arie Smit (born Adrianus Wilhelmus Smit on 15 April 1916 in Zaandam, Netherlands – died 23 March 2016 in Denpasar, Bali) was a Dutch-born Indonesian painter celebrated for his vibrant depictions of Balinese landscapes and village life.

Smit studied graphic design at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam. In 1938, he joined the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army and was stationed in the Dutch East Indies as a lithographer. His work engraving maps sparked a fascination with Bali. During World War II, he was captured by Japanese forces and endured over three years in forced labor camps along the Burma Railway.

After the war, Smit resumed work with the Topographical Service in Batavia (now Jakarta) and began painting in his spare time. He held his first exhibition in 1948. Following Indonesian independence, he chose to remain in the country and became an Indonesian citizen in 1951. He later taught at the Institut Teknologi Bandung.

In 1956, Smit moved to Bali, where he was captivated by the island's light and colour. He became a central figure in the Balinese art scene and, in 1960, founded the "Young Artists" movement in Ubud. This style, characterized by its naïve charm and vivid storytelling, was developed by local children he mentored, and it flourished under his guidance.

Arie Smit remained in Bali for the rest of his life, painting prolifically and influencing generations of artists. His legacy is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of modern Balinese art.
