ISAAC HUTSON (NEW ZEALAND, 19TH/20TH CENTURY) - Boer War Commemorative Jug H: 21 cm

  • Notes: The work is inscribed with a list of units and their commanding officers - Major Robin, Major Craddock, Major Jowsey, Major Somerville, Liet. Col. Newall. The base bears the inscription: 1st contingent Oct 1899/5th Contingent Mar 1900. The rim bears the legend, "Whawhai mo to Kanga (sic) moto kuini Ake Ake Ake (Fight for Homeland and Queen Forever)".

The Hutson Boer War jug was made to commemorate New Zealand''s first five Anglo-Boer war contingents. The production of the jug was perhaps inspired by the fact that the Hutson''s eldest son was a captain of the Cycle Corps and served in the South African campaign with New Zealand''s Second contingent.

Isaac Hutson was Peter Hutson''s brother, the founder of P.Hutson & Company in Wellington. The Hutsons established their pottery business in 1900 after arriving in New Zealand from England in 1872. Peter Hutson took a 14 year lease for land and, in partnership with his brother Isaac, upgraded the complex and installed the most modern machinery available. The Hutson''s business acquired a reputation for producing the finest pottery in the Southern Hemisphere and made their way into important private and government collections. On 24 January 1901 the New Zealand Mail (page 43) reported that ''Messrs Hutson and Co.''s establishment must be reckoned among the most important manufacturing institutions of Wellington''.
