The Bodypolitics collection was put together by Fiona Patten and Robbie Swan through the 1990s and the 2000s. During this time they ran the nation's sex industry lobby group, the Eros Association and were constantly coming into contact with erotic art and ephemera. They decided to collect it under the name of the National Museum of Erotica. In 2000 they launched the Museum on the main street of Canberra with over 400 items on display.

Not happy with the developing nanny state in Australia they decided to form a political party and called it the Sex Party. After almost winning a Senate seat in 2010 and again in 2013, Fiona Patten was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 2014. She was re elected in 2018 for a further four years.

Their increasing involvement in politics meant that their involvement in curating and procuring erotic art took a hit and in 2009 they decided to mothball the collection until they had achieved their political agenda and then re launch it. However re election in 2018 brought on the decision to sell the collection.

They travelled widely with their political lobby work and purchased interesting material wherever they could. Some of this is reflected in Patten's 2018 biography published by Allen and Unwin entitled 'Sex, Drugs and the Electoral Roll'.

The material offered for sale in this auction is not meant to be indicative of a fine art auction but more of a personal collection of material that was purchased always with an eye to using it in anti-censorship campaigns.

Typical of this approach is the offering of what is possibly Australia's oldest brothel collection. Elizabeth Keartland was said to be one of Melbourne's first high class masseuses offering her services to the professional community in the early 1900s. The collection consists of the three main items that identify her establishment as a gentleman's 'relaxation retreat' - as opposed to a 'house of ill-repute'. The pair of spelter statuettes, which were said to have adorned her reception area, were possibly made at a Geelong foundry but could also have been imported from England. They are fine examples of art nouveau for those who couldn't afford the bronzes and are emblazoned with copper inscriptions at the base of 'Confidence' and 'Discretion'. Just what every tired politician who came through the door wanted to be assured of in those days. Her brass plaque was made by Little Collins st manufacturers, C.C. Roeszler, who did many of the professional signs in Melbourne in those years. The collapsible green quilted-leather and horsehair massage chair, is a corker. It would have taken 'sir' from an upright sitting position from which he would no doubt have had a scotch or gin to calm him down after his busy day, through to a prone position from which Ms Keartland would have been able to minister to his tension areas. Left to the Museum by a kind but anonymous benefactor.
