12x 2015 Out of Step Wine Co. 'Malakoff Estate' Nebbiolo, Pyrenees.
Malakoff is one of those places where, to me, it looks like it would be a bugger to do anything but grow grapes, as it presents a myriad of challenges. But it also produces fruit of great intensity, predominantly shiraz & nebbiolo, now widely sought after by producers in the know. Low yields & astute viticulture combined with nebbiolo's late ripening make for grapes of wonderful balance, retaining acidity whilst still achieving sugar & flavour ripeness. The resultant wines are deep, concentrated & complex with firm tannins whilst still being very approachable in their youth.
Score: 94 Points Wine Front
"This is a rip-roaring nebbiolo out of the Pyrenees. Wild fermented. Matured in old oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. The crying shame is: only 215 dozen were made.
It casts a spell. Last year's release was excellent; this is better again. The perfume, the character, the spread, the command. Tobacco, leather, dark chocolate, orange rind, roasted nuts and asphalt. Licorice. It's got it all going on. But it's not just the flavours themselves. It's the drama of it. Some warmth perhaps but the power through the finish, the feeling that you can't look away: this is getting into 'wow' territory." - winefront.com.au
